Richard “Dick” Charles Baseball History Collection (MS52)

Abstract: “Dick” Charles was a reporter for 38 years at the Journal Tribune (Biddeford, Me.), daily newspaper and an avid historian. This collection contains game scores, team names, game locations and dates of games played by Biddeford and Saco amateur and some school baseball teams as compiled by Mr. Charles.

Scope & Contents: This collection consists of a list of game information for various Biddeford and Saco baseball teams from 1894-1962. Many (but not all) entries contain the following information: Year-year (season); Date of game, location; Team 1, score and Team 2, score; Any special or extra information about the game.

Of note: In the early years the local teams played a number of “colored” teams from as far away as Philadelphia and Florida, and in 1905 played against a women’s team from Indiana.
